FAVOURITES / November '18
Quite simply, here is a snapshot of things, people, places, art, or whatever it may be, that caught our eye this November. We are trying to work out why we’ve been drawn to flashes of slightly lemony yellow. Instant warmth on frosty morning? Hopeful exuberance and anticipation as we head towards the end of another exciting year? Or maybe something to do with the strange quality November light has. Image details and our thoughts can be found below.
Images (L to R):
1. Frescoes from the Villa of Livia, dated to the second half of the 1st century BC, Rome, at the Museo Nazionale Romano di Palazzo Massimo. Frescoes are forever (or for thousands of years at least). Image: via milestonerome.
2. Anni Albers, study for DO 11, 1973 goache on blueprint paper. Fans of the Albers since we found out about Black Mountain College, the Anni Albers exhibition at the Tate Modern is high up on our December away days list. It’s there until 27th January 2019. tate.org.uk.
3. The Hotel Peter and Paul, New Orleans. Beautifully crafted interiors by Ash NYC. Straight onto our 2019 Hotel hit-list, feeling Deep South adventures and a big bowl of gumbo coming on. hotelpeterandpaul.com.
4. The ‘Of Rainbows and Other Monuments’ series of photographs by Austrian photo artist, Clemens Ascher. Surrealist, brutalist and mysterious, and featuring the Ferrari Rainbow concept car designed by Marcello Gandini for Bertone in 1976. http://clemensascher.com
5. Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, wearing a magnificent Gucci cape (that even Louis XIV would have envied), Dior hat and Louboutin boots. Mary Poppins is a bit of a superhero and a treasured family favourite, so we are looking forward to the new film, Mary Poppins Returns, which is being released in the UK in December. This is half of a photograph by Annie Leibovitz for the December 2018 issue of Vogue UK. Full magical slideshow at vogue.com.
6. This atmospheric slice of the exceptional Charleston House in East Sussex, which feels like a very fitting palette for the moment. From a photo by Paul Massey for House & Garden UK. charleston.org.uk
7. A section from ‘The Hunt’ (2016) by Tomo Campbell. Delicate, abstract and historical, a sort of shifting abstract Rococo, a painting to read like a book. Via cobgallery.com.
8. Almost buttery, ivory ribbed beeswax candles from Matilda Goad. And having a sconce moment. Image: matildagoad.com
9. Spring II, an Aster Muro panel fresco from 2017. Perhaps unseasonally titled but it has a beautiful quality of watery light and a vivid and revitalising palette that is uplifting at any time of year. And in November it serves as a necessary and encouraging reminder of the promise of spring.
